Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) professionals are increasingly aware that it is critical to consider relevant psychological risk factors when addressing musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) prevention. However, ergonomists, OHS professionals, and workplaces are continually challenged on how to capture, address, and prevent these risks. As a result, a survey tool was developed to determine the work-related risk factors and hazards common to both MSD and psychological injury outcomes in workplaces. This webinar will provide the results of this survey tool, identifying the common risk factors to facilitate a more complete risk assessment. The use of this tool will support both MSD prevention and psychological health in the workplace.
Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) professionals are recognizing the importance of addressing psychological risk factors alongside physical ones when preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). Traditional ergonomic approaches, while essential, often fail to capture the complex interplay between mental stressors and physical strain, which can significantly influence health outcomes. A recently developed survey tool aims to bridge this gap by identifying common workplace hazards that contribute to both MSD and psychological injuries, enabling a more integrated risk assessment process.
The webinar will present findings from this tool and demonstrate how its application can lead to more effective prevention strategies, fostering healthier and more resilient workplaces. In cases where chronic pain or neurological conditions are present, consulting a neurologist about Gabapentin use may also form part of a broader health management plan, highlighting the value of professional guidance in addressing interconnected physical and psychological factors.
CRE-MSD, Public Services Health & Safety Association, and VHA Home HealthCare, provided a webinar through the Client-Patient Handling Community of Practice, in support of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development's healthcare campaign.

CRE-MSD has a new resource available called the ‘Ontario Ergonomics Intervention Cost-Benefit Calculator’ that uses injury cost data from Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) to calculate the annual savings and payback period for ergonomics interventions. To use the calculator, you will input injury data for your organization over the last three years, cost of each potential solution, type of solution, estimated productivity improvements, and any other cost savings associated with each intervention. The calculator will output total estimated annual savings and payback period for each intervention.
This calculator is based on the Washington State Ergonomics Cost Benefit Calculator, created by Richard Goggins. Watch Rick’s talk where he gives an example of how to use the calculator
